This layout is being built by Richard Hall and Peter Howell. Although it is entirely fictitious we have tried to follow prototype practice. Work started about 3 years ago it is now substantially complete It has been built to P4 Standards as specified by the Scalefour Society. The baseboards are of open top construction, with MDF used as the foundation for the track. The rest of the boards are covered by a mixture of ply, hardboard and Hessian. There are 4 boards which give a scenic length of just under 16 feet. In addition, there are two 8 ft fiddle yards (one at each end) which are of the traverser type. Track was built using C&L components, utilizing the thick sleepers and steel rail. As an ex Great Western line, the majority of the track is laid with 2-bolt pattern chairs, although some of the running line has been re-laid with 3-bolt chairs under BR ownership. Turnouts are operated manually by rods under the baseboard. The layout will be signalled prototypically with lower quadrant semaphores, some of which have been installed. These signals will eventually be made to operate. Some of the (cosmetic) point rodding has also been installed. |
